The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is the new European tool designed to reduce the risk of “carbon leakage” and align the cost of emissions between domestic production and imported goods from non-EU countries.

Simply put: those who import certain energy-intensive products into Europe will have to declare the COâ‚‚ emissions embedded in those goods.

To which companies does the CBAM apply

The CBAM covers, in the first stage, imports into the EU of goods belonging to specific sectors, including:

  • iron and steel
  • aluminum
  • cement
  • fertilizers
  • electricity

Companies that import these products will have to comply with new requirements to collect, report and certify emissions data along their supply chain, with deadlines and formats defined by the regulations.

Data, processes, reporting: why digital solutions are needed

Managing CBAM compliance means:

  • Collect reliable data on emissions embedded in imported products
  • Tracking information coming in from different suppliers and factories
  • Generate reporting that meets the standards required by the European Union

Without a digital medium, these steps are likely to be slow, fragmented, and difficult to control.

As Regesta Group, together with partner Clarex, we work on supply chain processes and sustainability with SAP technology, developing integrated solutions for:

  • centralize emission data
  • Automate collection and control flows
  • Simplify the production of documentation required by CBAM regulations

Our webinar: CBAM compliance, digital that simplifies

To learn more about the operational impact of CBAM, we organized the webinar “CBAM compliance: digital that simplifies,” dedicated to enterprises in the iron and steel, aluminum, electricity and cement sectors.

During the meeting, with speeches by Daniele Barbirato and Francesca Solazzi (Regesta Group / Clarex), Adriana Andreea Ursu (SAP), and Stefano Ferrari (siderweb), we analyzed how the new CBAM obligations can be managed digitally, through SAP solutions and integrated tools for collection, tracking and reporting of emission data.
