The migration of enterprise infrastructure to SAP S\/4HANA<\/strong> remains a pressing issue for steel companies<\/strong>. Although today\u2019s discussions about technology focus onartificial intelligence<\/strong> andthe autonomous enterprise<\/strong>, we must not forget that these innovations require a solid, reliable, and scalable technological foundation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>

A relationship that is as simple as it is essential: to implement systems capable of interpreting information and intervening in processes, you need an ERP system that properly manages materials, orders, production, and responsibilities.<\/strong> And people need to understand how to use these new capabilities in their work.<\/p>\n

This is one of the insights we took away from the SAP for Manufacturing, Materials & Mining Conference 2026\u00b9<\/strong>, organized by TAC Insights in collaboration with SAP on October 13 and 14 in Rome. Together with Clarex, we participated as the only Italian SAP partner among the event\u2019s sponsors<\/strong>, with the aim of engaging with international companies and experts on the evolution of the industry.<\/p>\n

An opportunity to explore new SAP technologies and tailor them to the needs of the companies we support, starting with an industry that is deeply rooted in our history: the steel industry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

\"SAP<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Being an SAP partner for the steel industry means understanding the industry and its processes<\/h2>\n

For us at Regesta, working with steel companies begins with an understanding of the conditions under which decisions are made<\/strong>. The choice of a material, a change to a production sequence, or the confirmation of a delivery depends on information from various company departments\u2014from finance to production, including organizational aspects. To connect these elements, it is necessary to understand their significance at each stage of the process. <\/p>\n

The availability of a certain quantity of steel, for example, must be evaluated in terms of chemical composition, dimensions, processing already performed, certifications, and quality status. Materials belonging to the same commercial category may have characteristics that affect their suitability for a specific order. In turn, any processing of the product must maintain a traceable link to the original casting or batch.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

As discussed in depth during the event, these requirements are addressed by SAP\u2019s features dedicated to Mill Products. One example of this is the number of technical features available in batch management<\/strong>, which supports\u00b2 the transfer of characteristics to derived batches and the identification of batches with a common origin. System configuration can leverage these capabilities to benefit the company\u2019s operations<\/strong>, taking into account how it manufactures, handles, and sells its materials. <\/p>\n

That is precisely what industry experience is for<\/strong>: identifying what information should accompany the product and what checks ensure the reliability of the subsequent steps. This work must be done before AI is implemented and determines how effective it will be.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why the Migration to S\/4HANA Remains Relevant<\/h2>\n

At the conference in Rome, the link between ERP transformation and AI adoption was also featured in the program: alongside in-depth discussions on the autonomous enterprise, there were sessions dedicated\u00b3 to S\/4HANA projects<\/strong> and the architectures needed to leverage artificial intelligence in industrial processes.<\/p>\n

For companies in the steel industry, migration means, first and foremost, assessing how the current system supports their operations<\/strong>. Over the years, rules and practices may have shaped processes, which in turn have required the creation of procedures and customizations for production or sales management. The first step toward modernization is to reassess these processes, identify which requirements are still valid, and evaluate how to meet them using the new features of the platform currently being implemented. <\/p>\n

To do this effectively, attention must also be paid to activities that take place outside the ERP system<\/strong>. A spreadsheet may contain information used to plan a production run; a manual check may resolve a discrepancy between inventory and the system; an informal communication may determine when a material is considered available. Bringing these mechanisms into a project allows you to understand their role and decide how to manage them. <\/p>\n

The migration also provides an opportunity to clarify operational rules and improve the continuity of information.<\/strong> The result must be verifiable: progress consistent with actual production, up-to-date inventory levels, quality controls correctly linked to materials, and financial data traceable to consumption and activities. These conditions make the ERP system a usable foundation for subsequent applications of artificial intelligence. <\/p>\n

From ERP to AI Agents: Building the Operational Link<\/h2>\n

The ERP plays a central role because it manages the transactions and rules by which the company purchases, produces, sells, and reports results. It is no coincidence that it is often referred to as the backbone of the information system. An AI agent\u2014or even a simple assistant\u2014must be able to access this information<\/strong> to understand the context needed to interpret a business request. Furthermore, to perform a task, application integrations, authorizations, and controls consistent with the process are required. <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s consider a possible scenario as an example: a manager wants to understand why a delivery is at risk of being delayed.<\/strong> An AI agent could gather information on the order status, production progress, and any operational or organizational bottlenecks, then prepare a summary of the causes and the checks that need to be completed. If properly designed and integrated, it could also suggest next steps or assign a verification request to the appropriate department. <\/p>\n

The benefit lies in reducing the amount of work and the manual steps required to reconstruct the situation.<\/strong> The manager can focus on the more strategic aspects of the job, such as evaluating alternatives, based on related information and more easily verifiable data that would otherwise have taken hours or days to gather manually. To achieve this, however, it is necessary to define which sources are reliable, how frequently they are updated, and under what conditions the automated process should be interrupted. <\/p>\n

Autonomous enterprise: more control for people<\/h2>\n

In an industry where decisions affect facilities, materials, and commercial commitments\u2014often involving large quantities of materials and significant investments\u2014the concept of the \u201cautonomous enterprise\u201d must be explained precisely. Autonomy refers to defined activities carried out within rules established by the company, with clearly assigned responsibilities and the ability to intervene. In short, the issue is not about ceding strategic and operational control to automated systems, but rather ensuring that these systems work to make that control itself easier, more effective, and based on timely and relevant information.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

A system can flag missing information, detect an abnormal condition, prepare a proposal, or initiate an authorized action. The choice of which operations to entrust to it depends on the effects they may produce. Gathering documents for an audit and adjusting a production priority, for example, require different levels of control. In short, this brings us back to the issue of real-world experience: our role as system integrators is to assist companies in this process of analysis and planning<\/strong>, so that their knowledge and expertise can be \u201ctranslated\u201d into rules and procedures that the autonomous enterprise can replicate. <\/p>\n

In the steel industry, this criterion is particularly important. For example, a proposal to use an alternative material must take into account the specific requirements, any customer approvals, and the orders for which that material is already intended. The evaluation must allow for traceability of the data used and clarity regarding which conditions were verified<\/strong>; above all, it must involve human decision-makers who, through their experience, add value to the decision. <\/p>\n

AI can therefore enhance people\u2019s ability to oversee processes<\/strong>: highlighting exceptions, bringing them to the manager\u2019s attention, and reducing the repetitive steps required to investigate them further. For this support to be adopted, however, it is necessary to demonstrate how it works in an everyday context and to clarify when the system intervenes and when a decision is required. User understanding is part of the project. <\/p>\n

International Comparison and Collaboration with Businesses<\/h2>\n

Attending the conference in Rome allowed us to examine these issues in an international context and to engage with companies in the industry that are addressing similar challenges<\/strong> through different organizational structures and systems. Along with the in-depth technical discussions, we rediscovered the value of our relationships with companies that have been collaborating with Regesta on projects and developments for years. <\/p>\n

For us, being an SAP partner for the steel industry means maintaining this connection between process expertise and technological innovation.<\/strong> Our knowledge of the industry allows us to assess where a new feature might be useful; engaging with the SAP ecosystem helps us understand which capabilities to make available and what prerequisites are required.<\/p>\n

This is where the work with each company begins: defining which processes to improve, assessing the status of the systems, and developing a coherent sequence of actions<\/strong>. The migration to SAP S\/4HANA and the introduction of AI can thus be approached as part of a measurable business evolution, in which every technological choice serves a specific purpose and people have the tools to manage its effects. <\/p>\n<\/div>
